Four IBC boxers saw action on the Times ABC show at the Rocket, Holloway Road on Friday 25.2.11.
First up was Islingtons 13yr old BEN TURNER (56kg) against ZAC CHELLI of Dale Youth ABC in an all action encounter. In the 1st round BEN pressed forward in an effort to establish his authority early on and was met by an equally determined CHELLI who demonstrated good composure under pressure. There was little to separate the two boxers after the first round and they sustained their high workrate into the 2nd round as neither wanted to concede any ground but as the fatigue started to creep in, it was ZAC’S accuracy that made the difference. In the 3rd round TURNER piled on the pressure as he endeavoured to make up the deficit but he was finding it increasingly difficult to land clean shots on the ever elusive CHELLI. The Dale Youth boxer picked his shots well and remained composed to seal a hard earned points win.

Next up was Islingtons 14yr old ‘SON’ McDONAGH (47kg) against JACK BROOKER of Northolt ABC in a return bout (Brooker claimed victory over Son in last months Schools Championships). The bout followed a similar pattern to the previous encounter with McDONAGH applying pressure to the fleet footed BROOKER and SON had some early success as he landed with some solid single shots when he found his range. In the 2nd round, SON continued to test JACK’S defences as he persevered with sporadic attacks which the Northolt boxer did well to contain. It was ‘down to the wire’ in the last round as McDONAGH kept probing and attacking against the slick counter punching skills of BROOKER, keeping it tight all the way. The bout concluded with JACK earning his 2nd majority points decision over SON in a very entertaining bout.

Next up for Islington was 16yr old DAVOUD QAUYUMI (60kg) against GRANT DAVITYAN of West Ham ABC in a pulsating match which saw DAVOUD under tremendous pressure in the opening round as GRANT tore into him in an effort to overwhelm the Islington man. The West Hammer threw everthing he had in first minute and DAVOUD had his work cut out to repel the onslaught, but he kept his composure well to weather the early storm. In round 2 DAVITYAN came out firing on all cylinders again in an effort to upset QAUYUMI but the Islington boxer showed confidence in his work as he traded with GRANT to turn the tide and now it was DAVOUD who took control of the proceedings as the West Ham boxer began to tire. In round 3 GRANT looked like a spent force as he didn’t seem to have the energy for another sustainable attack as DAVOUD stuck diligently to his instructions to use his jab and repeatedly found the target as DAVITYAN was almost defenceless with fatigue. It resulted in a hard earned points victory for DAVOUD who really showed his mettle in such an absorbing contest.
Davoud Qauyumi
And finally Islington’s Welterweight Roberto Ruffini scored an impressive win against old foe Elijah Okoubi (Times ABC). Ruffini had previously faced and beaten Okoubi in the ABA Novices, so the Times boxer was looking for his revenge.
As it was, it was Ruffini who started the brighter, taking it straight to Okoubi who was constantly back peddling. A wild hook from Ruffini followed by a light tap from Okoubi saw the IBC man hit the canvas. It was clearly a slip, but to the amazement of the crowd, the referee decided to issue a count. The incident did not deter the Islington boxer as he continued to press for the remainder of the round.
The second round followed a similar pattern to the first. Okoubi, looking to counter as he back peddled, but a couple of strong hooks from Ruiffini caught the Times man who held on. Ruffini continued to work with both hands and was clearly on top.
The last round was all Ruffini as he constantly bullied Okoubi across the ring. Whatever Okoubi tried, Ruffini had the answer. A two handed attack by Ruffini trapped is opponent in the corner where Ruffini worked away with both hands. The unanimous decision rightly went to Ruffini.
